Instructors create quizzes in their LMS. A linked MATCHA activity controls how students enter the quiz and when they can begin.

The instructor prepares the quiz
The instructor creates a quiz in their LMS and sets an access password on it.

The instructor creates the MATCHA activity
The instructor creates a MATCHA activity for the quiz. When MATCHA is integrated into the LMS, this is available through the LTI connection. The quiz feature must be enabled as part of a MATCHA enterprise deployment.

Students open the activity
Students use an activity code or an LTI launch from their LMS to open the activity in MATCHA.

Students sign in to the LMS
MATCHA prompts students to sign in to the LMS, then takes them directly to the quiz and enters the access password for them. Students cannot retrieve the password from MATCHA.

MATCHA controls when the quiz can begin
Before allowing students to begin the quiz, MATCHA waits for check-in, if enabled, and for the MATCHA activity to start.

What each feature does, its options, and what it requires.
Quiz-only browsing
- After students sign in, MATCHA restricts access to the quiz. They cannot browse other LMS pages or leave the quiz in MATCHA’s browser until they have submitted it.
- MATCHA enters the quiz’s access password automatically, without revealing it to students.
- Locked-Down Mode prevents switching to other apps, while Check-In, when enabled, lets proctors control when students can begin.
Locked-Down Mode
- This feature enforces fullscreen usage and blocks switching to other apps while a writing activity is in progress.
- This feature is intended to be used for in-person activities.
- MATCHA detects any software that makes itself available above it or on a different monitor.
- In case a Locked-Down Mode violation is detected (say, if an application on a timer appears above MATCHA during an exam), MATCHA locks up. A proctor needs to intervene, scanning the QR code on the student's screen to unlock MATCHA if they judge that the student should be allowed to continue.
- MATCHA is the only real word processor with Locked-Down Mode!
Frequently asked questions
Can a student leave a locked-down activity by closing MATCHA or the project?
Yes, but only after a one-minute countdown that displays a bright purple screen to draw proctors’ attention.
A student who leaves a locked-down activity cannot rejoin without a proctor’s help. On reopening it, they face a red lock screen that a proctor must unlock. This preserves students’ freedom to close an app while making it impractical to cheat by closing and reopening activities.
Can a student taking a quiz in Brightspace or Canvas leave the quiz?
MATCHA prevents students from navigating away from the quiz in its browser until they have submitted it.
Do you plan to offer quiz-taking for other LMSes soon?
Yes. We plan to release quiz-taking for Moodle and Blackboard sometime in October 2026.
